The Zamfara State government has banned signing-out carnivals and related activities in all schools in the state, citing rising cases of student misconduct associated with such celebrations.
The directive was issued by the Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, in a circular signed by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam and circulated to Governor Dauda Lawal, security agencies, school authorities, and other relevant stakeholders.
According to the ministry, signing-out carnivals organised by final-year students in recent years have increasingly degenerated into events marked by indecent dressing, unruly conduct and other practices considered inconsistent with the moral and academic standards expected in schools.
The circular warned that the government will no longer tolerate activities that undermine discipline and distract students from the core values of education.

It also continued that teachers found aiding, encouraging or condoning such activities will face strict disciplinary actions, including queries, final written warnings, suspension or demotion, depending on the severity of the offence.
Students who violate the directive will face stiff penalties. The ministry noted that sanctions could include withholding or cancellation of examination results, as well as requiring affected students to repeat their final year, where necessary.
To ensure strict compliance with the new directive, security agencies and school security personnel have been instructed to intensify surveillance in and around school premises, particularly during periods when signing-out activities are usually held.
The ministry also appealed to parents, religious leaders and community stakeholders to support the government’s efforts by promoting discipline and reinforcing acceptable moral standards among students.
It reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening discipline, promoting academic excellence and safeguarding the moral values of students in all educational institutions in the state.
