The senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing worsening insecurity and the hardship faced by his constituents.
Lamido announced his decision on Saturday in a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that his resignation takes immediate effect.
“I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect,” he wrote.
Explaining the move, the lawmaker said the decision followed what he described as the party’s inability to adequately protect lives and address the pressing challenges confronting the people of his district.

“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them,” he said, adding that “this defection is primarily in the interest of the people I represent.”
Sokoto East Senatorial District, like many parts of the state, has in recent years faced persistent security challenges, including attacks by armed groups and displacement of rural communities.
The region has also been affected by rising cost of living and limited access to basic services, issues that have dominated political discourse ahead of future elections.
Lamido’s resignation adds to a growing list of political realignments in Sokoto State, where shifting alliances have continued to shape the balance of power between major parties.
The senator, however, did not disclose his next political move or whether he plans to join another party.
