The wife of the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega, has passed away.
Her family confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, April 5, 2026, announcing that her Janazah prayer would take place later the same day in Abuja.
According to the statement, the funeral prayer for the late Hadiza Jega will be held after the Zuhr prayer at 1:30 p.m. at the National Mosque in Abuja.
The family called on friends, associates, and well-wishers to remember them in prayers during the period of mourning.
They also prayed for the repose of her soul, asking that Allah grant her Aljannah Firdausi.
Her husband, Prof. Attahiru Jega, currently serves as Co-Chairman of the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, Special Adviser to the President on Livestock Development, and Pro-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University and Usman Danfodio University.
Jega previously served as Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, before his appointment as chairman of the electoral commission.
Meanwhile, Bayero University, Kano, has also announced the passing of Hajiya Hadiza Jega and expressed condolences to the former vice-chancellor.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of the wife of our former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Attahiru Jega, OFR.
“Her Janazah will be held immediately after Zuhr prayer at the National Mosque, Abuja, today Sunday, 5th April 2026.
“May Allah grant her Aljannatul Firdaus and forgive her shortcomings. May He also grant the family the strength and patience to bear this loss. Ameen,” the institution said in a statement.
The late Hajiya Hadiza Jega was widely recognised for her support for education and community development, particularly in northern Nigeria.
