Former governors from the South-East have declared their support for President Bola Tinubu, citing ongoing infrastructural development across the region.
The position was made known on Tuesday following the formal inauguration of the Forum of South-East Former Governors, a platform aimed at advising and supporting serving governors on key regional and national issues.
Naija News reports that the development was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the forum’s maiden meeting, which was read by the Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi.
According to the communiqué, the forum is a non-partisan body open to all former governors from the South-East, irrespective of political affiliation.
“The South East Forum of Former Governors is hereby formed today, the 7th of April 2026. The purpose of this body is to support the serving governors of the South East and advise them on key zonal and national matters,” the communiqué stated.
The former governors commended President Tinubu for what they described as an “infrastructure revolution” in the South-East, as well as for appointing individuals from the region into key positions in his administration.
“We also commend Mr President very highly for the appointments, some of them very significant, given to sons and daughters of the South East, as well as for the infrastructure development in the region, just as is being done in other parts of the country,” they said.

The forum also appreciated the Federal Government’s support to state governments nationwide, noting that such backing had contributed to developmental strides recorded across the region.
“We thank Mr. President for the support extended to the governors of the South East, and indeed to all governors across the country. This support has greatly contributed to the achievements recorded in their respective offices,” the communiqué added.
They further praised current South-East governors for their efforts in infrastructure development, security, and empowerment initiatives.
“We commend the great work that the current governors of the South East are doing for the benefit of our people,” they noted.
‘Strategic Decision’ To Back Tinubu
The former governors declared that serving governors in the region are united in their support for Tinubu’s reelection in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
“We boldly state that all the governors of the South East are supporting Mr President’s re-election, and we commend them for this strategic decision. We will continue to support them in this regard,” they stated.
As part of its next steps, the forum said it would engage directly with serving governors in the region through a planned courtesy visit to outline its objectives and explore areas of collaboration.
The body also pledged to support development initiatives and sensitise citizens on the efforts of both state and federal governments.
Those present at the inaugural meeting included former governors such as Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Chris Ngige, Sullivan Chime, Okezie Ikpeazu, David Umahi, and Martin Elechi, Naija News reports.
The forum noted that some former governors were absent due to health-related issues and other engagements, but expressed optimism that over 90 per cent participation would be achieved in subsequent meetings.
