Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has taken aim at prominent pastors, including Bishop David Oyedepo and Pastor Enoch Adeboye, over what he describes as elitism in educational and religious institutions.
Criticism over access and elitism in religious institutions
Sowore alleged that while churches attract contributions from ordinary Nigerians, their children are largely unable to access elite educational facilities like Covenant University, which he claimed mostly enrols children of wealthy elites.
The comments were made during a public address highlighting inequality in Nigeria’s education and religious sectors.
Sowore’s remarks resonate with broader debates about access to quality education for underprivileged families, echoing controversies from previous years when several Nigerian universities were criticised for high tuition fees and selective admissions that favour affluent families.
Similar criticisms were raised in 2022 when religious institutions were accused of creating disparities between members who contribute financially and those who cannot afford associated costs.
Calls for fairness and transparency in religious education
“You build Covenant University, and then ask poor people to come to church. You’ll go and drive them from Ajegunle with your Holyghost buses, but their children cannot go to Covenant University. It’s the children of sinners that end up going — most of them children of Alhajis stealing money in Abuja,” Sowore said.
He added, “People who come to church religiously and pay tithes and offerings that you ask from them cannot afford to send their children to your university. If you’re a member of Redeem, you should reflect on this inequality and what it means for your community.”
The statements have sparked heated discussions on social media, with supporters praising Sowore’s focus on fairness and critics questioning his approach to addressing religious leadership.
