Westlake, Bowie, Glenn, Cedar Park and Lago Vista stormed into their UIL girls basketball regional finals with wins Tuesday while six other Central Texas teams — Vandegrift, Johnson, Hendrickson, Weiss, Pflugerville and Anderson — fell just short:
Freshman leads Chaps: Westlake freshman Geralynn Byers-Veal had a huge game — 18 points and 14 rebounds — as undefeated Westlake overpowered Harlingen 62-22. Tamia King had 13 points and nine rebounds, Wynn Thorne had eight points and eight rebounds, Molly Frazer added seven points, six rebounds and three assists. Westlake will play Converse Judson in the regional final.
Glenn stings Hornets: Glenn’s defense hurled a first-quarter goose egg at Flour Bluff, leading the Hornets 15-0 after the first period and then cruised to a 50-31 win. Jennah Lee led Glenn with 18 points while Ariel Goppy added 14. The Grizzlies will face top-ranked San Antonio Wagner in the regional finals.
Other Austin-area results:
• In Class 4A, Lago Vista advanced to the regional final by beating Tuloso-Midway 51-37.
• Anderson was eliminated by LaPorte 57-36. The Trojans finished 18-10 overall and 11-3 in district, their best finish since 2012.
