

The Federal Government has released a total of ₦195,434,250 under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support 6,279 students of Sule Lamido University, Jigawa State.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Ibrahim Yakasai, disclosed this during a press briefing ahead of the institution’s second combined convocation ceremony, held at the Senate Building in Kafin-Hausa.
He explained that the funds were disbursed in eight batches between December 2025 and March 2026.
According to him, the first batch, released on 18 December 2025, had the highest number of beneficiaries, with 3,384 students receiving ₦104,706,000.
Yakasai added that subsequent disbursements followed in varying tranches, with 765 students benefiting ₦24,099,000 in the second batch, while 510 students received ₦15,512,750 in the third batch. In the fourth batch, 1,066 students got ₦33,578,250, with smaller batches disbursed through February and March.
The Vice-Chancellor also revealed that the university would graduate a total of 4,109 students across six academic sessions at the forthcoming convocation. Of the figure, 154 students earned first-class honours, 1,326 obtained second-class upper division, 1,954 graduated with second-class lower division, 649 with third-class, while 26 bagged pass degrees.
He described the convocation as a significant milestone in the growth and development of the institution, noting that it reflects its commitment to academic excellence.
Yakasai further highlighted major strides recorded by the university, including the expansion of academic programmes, introduction of postgraduate studies, and the restructuring of the School of Preliminary Studies into the School of Preliminary and Continuing Education (SPACE).
He disclosed that plans were underway for the take-off of a College of Medicine, alongside ongoing development projects such as the construction of academic facilities, students’ hostels, a modern library, road networks and specialised research centres.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted improvements in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital transformation, as well as the adoption of solar energy solutions to boost efficiency and sustainability.
He, however, appealed to the Jigawa State Government for additional staff recruitment and the provision of accommodation to meet the growing student population and sustain quality teaching, research and service delivery.
