MUTAN urges Muslims to pursue knowledge at Lagos quiz competition – Tribune Online

MUSLIMS have been urged to prioritise the pursuit of beneficial knowledge as a means of purifying their devotion.

The charge was given by participants at the third edition of the Islamic and Science Quiz Competition of the Muslim Teachers’ Association of Nigeria (MUTAN), Lagos State chapter, held in Lagos.

In his welcome address, the MUTAN President, Alhaji Abdul Fatai Oladejo, said there is no way the practice of Islam can be separated from knowledge.

Quoting from the Qur’an, he said: “Islam calls us to learn all kinds of beneficial knowledge. Branches of knowledge vary in status, the highest of which is knowledge of Sharee’ah, followed by knowledge of medicine, and then other fields of knowledge.”

He therefore urged Muslims to seek both Islamic and secular knowledge.

In his contribution, the pioneer chairman of MUTAN, Alhaji Olufemi Tiamiyu Bakare, stated that Islam cannot be separated from science and technology.

“Science, Mathematics and other branches of knowledge all originate from the Qur’an. There is no branch of knowledge that does not originate from the Qur’an,” he said, while encouraging students to make the Qur’an their model.

In the senior secondary school category, Vetland Senior Grammar School, represented by Ismail Opedara and Fatimah Oyekemi, emerged first with 67 points, narrowly defeating Ransome Kuti Senior Grammar School, Mushin, represented by Adegboyega Mutmainnah and Kehinde Asmau, who scored 65 points.

Birrel Avenue Senior High School, Education District IV, represented by Ismail Akinwunmi and Muntari Muhammed, came third with 57 points.

Army Cantonment Boys Senior Secondary School, Ojo (District V), Ilado Community Junior High School (District III), and Oreyo Senior Grammar School, Ikorodu (District II), placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

In the junior category, Vetland Junior Grammar School (District I) emerged first, as Suleiman Muhammed Burhan and Alawode Khadijah Itunu scored 87 points, ahead of Igbobi Junior High School (District II), represented by Sikiru Azeeza Omoyeni and Bello Hameedah Ohunene, who scored 84 points.

Agindingbi Junior High School (District VI) came third, with Mustapha Mujeeb Damilare and Ahmed Ahmeedat Omobolanle recording 77 points.

Badagry Junior Grammar School (District V), Muritala Ajadi Animashaun Community Junior Grammar School (District IV), and Lagos State Model Junior College, Agbowa-Ikosi (District III), finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

The computer-based competition featured questions in Islamic Studies, English Language, Mathematics, and the Sciences.
