Cybercabs are spotted on the test track at Gigafactory Texas

Cybercab, Tesla Inc.’s first new model since Cybertruck, is now being tested at Gigafactory Texas.

At least one of the Cybercabs spotted Friday on the test track at Gigafactory Texas had a human in the front passenger seat. Unlike prototypes that have been seen on streets around Austin since January with drivers at the wheel, these Cybercabs had no rearview mirrors. It was unclear if they had steering wheels or control pedals. Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk says the cars will be fully autonomous, built with no controls. But another company official has said Cybercab could be built with driver controls and sold as the company’s long-promised entry level EV. Musk is adamant it will be sold for $30,000 or less.

If fully autonomous, the vehicles could join Tesla’s fleet of Robotaxis. For now, the Austin company’s ride-hailing service operates with a relatively small fleet of Robotaxi-branded Model Ys. Despite Musk’s promises last year, most of those cars still operate with human safety monitors in the front seat rather than autonomously.

Wherever and however it lands, Cybercab appears to be moving toward production. On Tuesday, workers at the plant north of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport celebrated what Tesla said was the first production vehicle to roll off the line. Musk says it will be in limited production by April.
