APC Chairman Yilwatda Visits Shekarau, Woos him to APC

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has stepped up efforts to consolidate the party’s influence in Nigeria with a high-profile visit to former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau at his Mundubawa residence in Kano.

Leading a delegation that included Senator Hayatu Gwarzo, Yilwatda described the visit as both a gesture of respect and a strategic move to engage key political figures ahead of future elections.

During the meeting, the APC chairman praised Shekarau as a principled and experienced politician whose influence remains significant across Nigeria.

He emphasised the importance of unity among northern leaders at a critical time for the region’s political and economic future.

Yilwatda also reflected on the North’s support during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, noting that the same spirit of fairness should now allow the South to complete its tenure under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Highlighting ongoing federal initiatives, he pointed to key infrastructure projects such as the Lagos–Kano–Maradi rail line and regional gas pipelines, describing them as transformative developments that will boost trade and economic growth, particularly in Kano, which he called a major commercial hub in sub-Saharan Africa.

Making a direct appeal, Yilwatda urged Shekarau to join the APC, stressing that his leadership and experience are vital for the party’s progress and national cohesion.

“We are here to seek your support and leadership in moving the party and the country forward,” he said.

In response, Shekarau expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a show of brotherhood and respect.

However, he acknowledged that his current party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is facing serious internal challenges, which he likens to a “deep-rooted crisis.”

The former governor said he is consulting widely, including with his Shura Council, to determine his next political step.

“In the coming days, I will make my position known after due consultations,” Shekarau stated.
