The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has donated hospital beds and medical equipment to the Oyo Muslim community to improve access to affordable healthcare.
The donation, made on Friday, highlights the monarch’s growing emphasis on social intervention and public health since his ascension to the throne.
The Alaafin, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Lukman Ajibade, noted that the gesture was aimed at saving lives and supporting the healthcare needs of the people, particularly at the grassroots level.
The monarch emphasised that access to affordable healthcare remains a fundamental human right and a critical pillar for sustainable development in any society.
He stated that beyond individual well-being, accessible healthcare plays a vital role in safeguarding the economic stability of families, as manageable medical costs allow households to plan for the future without being burdened by excessive healthcare expenses.
The Alaafin further stated that healthy populations are essential for economic growth, pointing out that early medical intervention and preventive care significantly reduce long-term healthcare costs.
According to him, regular check-ups and timely diagnoses not only improve treatment outcomes but also help prevent the spread of diseases within communities.
The donation aligns with the Alaafin’s broader vision of prioritising service to the people over personal aggrandisement, a stance he has consistently emphasised since ascending the throne.

The monarch reiterated his commitment to improving the socio-economic conditions of his people, pledging continued support for initiatives that enhance quality of life across the Oyo Kingdom.
“The health of individuals is closely tied to the health of the community. When people have access to affordable healthcare, families are more stable, and communities become more productive.
“Healthy communities are more productive, and this ultimately leads to broader economic prosperity,” he said.
Responding, Islamic scholar Daud Igi-Ogun commended the Alaafin for the intervention, describing him as a visionary and pragmatic leader.
Igi-Ogun noted that the donation would go a long way in addressing healthcare challenges within the Muslim community, particularly in improving access to basic medical facilities.
The cleric added that the gesture reflects the monarch’s deep concern for the welfare of his subjects, regardless of religious or social differences.
The intervention highlights the expanding role of traditional institutions in addressing contemporary socio-economic challenges, particularly in areas where public infrastructure may be under strain.
