Friends, colleagues and associates gathered in Benin City to celebrate Dr. James-Wisdom Abhulimen, who recently retired as Head of Corporate Communications at Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) after 24 years of service.
The ceremony was marked by tributes, as speakers took turns to extol Dr. Abhulimen’s professionalism, leadership acumen and contributions to the growth and reputation of LAPO.
Described as a consummate communications strategist, Dr. Abhulimen was credited with playing a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s public image and strengthening its relationship with critical stakeholders across Nigeria and beyond.
Colleagues noted that his strategic initiatives in corporate communications significantly enhanced LAPO’s visibility, credibility and public trust, thereby advancing its core mandate of poverty alleviation and community empowerment.
“His understanding of corporate communications and ability to navigate complex challenges will be greatly missed,” one of his associates remarked, adding that his legacy of excellence and integrity has set a standard within the organisation.

Dr. Abhulimen joined LAPO on October 11, 2002, as a Programme Officer I, in the Publications Unit and rose through the ranks on the strength of performance and dedication.
He became a Senior Programme Officer in 2005 and was later elevated to the position of Deputy General Manager in November 2025.
Prior to his foray into the development sector, he had a flourishing career in journalism, serving as Airport and Aviation Correspondent with The Comet Newspapers between 2000 and 2001, and later as Editor of Evangelist Newspaper in Benin City.
In his farewell address, Dr. Abhulimen expressed gratitude to LAPO for the opportunity to serve and to his colleagues for their unwavering support throughout his career.
He added that while he looks forward to new opportunities in retirement, he remains committed to contributing to the advancement of public relations and development communication.
Abhulimen is currently the Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Edo State chapter, where he provides leadership in professional practice, advocacy and capacity building.
