Inter Lagos Seal NPFL Promotion After Smart City Draw

Inter Lagos FC will play in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) next season after clinching promotion on Monday night in Lagos.

The club confirmed their top-flight status following a 1-1 draw with Smart City FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. The result secured first place in Conference A of the Nigeria National League (NNL) with 29 points from 15 matches.

Promotion means the number of Lagos-based teams in the NPFL could rise to two, with Ikorodu City FC already competing in the top flight at the same venue.

The NNL had confirmed that the winners of the four conferences would move up. Inter Lagos wrapped up their ticket with a game to spare and became the second side promoted this season after Doma United FC. Two more teams will complete the quartet ahead of next season.

Attention now turns to the Super 4 play-off in Ikenne, where the four promoted teams will battle for the NNL title after the regular campaign ends.

Inter Lagos, which was founded in 2023 and plays home matches in Lagos, has quickly built a lively fanbase that backed their surge to promotion.

Club chairman Lanre Vigo struggled to hide his emotions after the final whistle.

“I can’t put it into words. I keep remembering the first day when we started this football club, and we are here now,” he said after Monday’s game.

“We are definitely going to bring good football, enjoy the journey, and make sure we survive.”
