‘What’s the Tea?’: On couples and 50-50 financial arrangements

BY DOLAPO ADENIJI

The kind of social conversations we have often reflects the economy, and as the economy gets even worse, the conversations become even more primal.

On this episode of ‘What’s The Tea?’, DA and Zeba analyse the growing trend of men and women splitting financial responsibility 50-50 in relationships/marriage — a practise especially popular among Nigerian couples in the diaspora.

DA strongly opposes it, citing that it is immensely contractual and mechanical and doesn’t quite express the selflessness that romantic relationships should be marked by. Zeba, ever logical, argues that while a firm ‘50-50’ situation might not be sustainable, every party must do what they can.

The conversation then segues into the morality of Nigerian influencers. Should they collect money to share posts about a charitable cause? The case in point was that of a woman who came out to share that while her husband was still critically ill, she sent messages to some influencers so they could, well, use their influence to promote a crowdfunding campaign for his treatment. According to her, these influencers charged her their usual rate, and in all, she spent 6 million naira. The hosts spend some time debating the morality of the situation.

Finally, some Nollywood drama. Not the fictional one now, but a real-life issue. Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham were at loggerheads at a movie premiere. DA and Zeba trace the genesis of the longtime beef between the two celebrities.
