Senator Ibrahim Lamido, who represents Sokoto East Senatorial District, has formally quit the All Progressives Congress, citing growing insecurity and the suffering of his constituents.
Naija News reports that in a post on đť•Ź, Lamido explained that persistent bandit attacks and a lack of adequate government response left communities in his district vulnerable.
Villages have been destroyed, and many residents displaced, prompting the senator to act in the interest of the people he represents.
He said repeated attempts to get federal attention and support to address the violence yielded little result. The lawmaker stressed that his decision is not driven by personal gain or political ambition but by the urgent need to safeguard his constituents’ lives and livelihoods.
The senator said he consulted with supporters, political colleagues, and community leaders before leaving the ruling party. While he did not reveal plans to join another political platform, he indicated that his future moves will focus on security and development at the grassroots level.
Lamido called on the federal government to take stronger action against banditry and restore peace in Sokoto and other affected northern regions, warning that ongoing inaction could worsen the crisis.
He wrote: “I, Senator Ibrahim Lamido, representing the good people of Sokoto East Senatorial District, hereby resign from the APC with immediate effect.
“My decision is based on the party’s failure to safeguard the people I represent and the hardship currently being faced by them. This defection is primarily in the interest of the people I represent.”
